ABOUT OUR LAB

The Sanitary Engineering Laboratory (SEL) operates under the Department of Water Resources and Environmental Engineering at the School of Civil Engineering, National Technical University of Athens (NTUA).
As one of Greece’s foremost research and education centers in the fields of Water Resources Management and Environmental Protection, SEL combines academic excellence with real-world impact. The laboratory plays a pivotal role in advancing sustainable solutions for today’s environmental challenges.
SEL was established in 1981 under the leadership of its founding Director, Dimitrios Christoulas. Since then, the laboratory has grown and evolved through the dedicated contributions of its former Directors, Andreas Andreadakis and Alexandra Katsiri, each playing a key role in its continued development and advancement.
Currently, over 30 specialized researchers - including postdoctoral scientists and PhD candidates - are actively engaged in a diverse portfolio of research projects.
Our work spans both fundamental and applied research, with a strong interdisciplinary approach in the following specific fields:

Management of water resources
Drinking water treatment
Wastewater and sludge treatment
Solid waste management
Bioremediation
Sludge and wastewater reuse
Nutrients and energy recovery from waste
Mathematical modelling of biological processes
Quality of aquatic environment
Fate of priority pollutants and emerging contaminants in the aquatic environment
Nature-based solutions
Ecosystems and environmental impact assessments
