SEL-NTUA team participated in the 3rd General Assembly of the European project SEACURE – Innovative solutions to prevent, reduce and remediate nutrient pollution along the land-river-sea system in the Mediterranean basin, held in Thessaloniki on 10–11/03/2026.
Hosted by the Soil and Water Research Institute (SWRI), the meeting brought together project partners to review progress across the different work packages and discuss the next steps of the project. SEL-NTUA was represented by Prof. Simos Malamis and Dr. Theocharis Nazos, who presented the latest progress from the Thessaly Plain demonstration site.

The first day focused on work package presentations and key project developments. Among the main highlights:
Successful Open Call: The call attracted more than 30 proposals from 15 countries. Following an external evaluation process, seven projects will be selected.
Technical progress: The consortium reported important advances in the multicriteria feasibility assessment and the Decision Support Tool (DST), both of which will help lay the foundation for regional scale-up. Partners also discussed opportunities to collaborate with and learn from other projects during the design of the tool.
Demonstration site updates: Leaders of SEACURE’s six demonstration sites in Italy, Greece and Spain shared important updates, offering a concrete overview of field activities and promising results that support future scalable implementation.
Stakeholder engagement: Partners explored ways to engage stakeholders more effectively while avoiding engagement fatigue. A role-playing exercise highlighted the importance of understanding stakeholders’ perspectives to ask the right questions, foster meaningful dialogue, and jointly identify key challenges and barriers.

On the second day, partners participated in a technical visit to the Axios Delta demonstration site. The visit included:
A stop at the Land Reclamation Organisation (TOEB) of Chalastra-Kalochori, where the president presented the extensive irrigation and drainage network serving nearly 15,900 hectares of farmland. Participants were also introduced to data-driven tools that support more efficient water management in the area, where SEACURE is promoting circular solutions for water reuse to prevent pollution and strengthen the resilience of both waterways and agricultural systems.
A visit to Kravvas Konstantinos’ Farm, where Kostas and the Ecodevelopment S.A. team shared their experience in applying data-driven approaches for precision agriculture. Built on years of field experimentation, these practices help protect land and water resources from nutrient pollution while maintaining yields. The exchange with partners demonstrated how data-based fertilisation and monitoring technologies can optimise inputs, improve soil management, and significantly reduce fertiliser use while maintaining farm profitability.

The General Assembly offered a valuable opportunity for partners to exchange knowledge, align upcoming activities, and strengthen collaboration toward SEACURE’s shared goal of tackling nutrient pollution across the Mediterranean basin.
