Elliniko–Argyroupoli Urban Living Lab: Transforming a School into a Hub for Water Resilience and Biodiversity

The Elliniko–Argyroupoli Urban Living Lab will transform a school environment into a dynamic space where circular water management, biodiversity and environmental education come together.
Within the framework of the UrbanSWARM project, students, teachers, municipal representatives, researchers, local companies and other stakeholders will work together to co-design and test innovative Nature-Based Solutions. The planned interventions will combine rainwater harvesting, urban farming, biodiversity enhancement and smart monitoring systems.
These solutions aim to strengthen the school’s resilience to both drought and intense rainfall, while creating greener, healthier and more inspiring spaces for learning and community engagement.

Schools as living laboratories for sustainable urban transformation
More than a school-based initiative, the Elliniko–Argyroupoli Urban Living Lab will demonstrate how educational environments can become living laboratories for innovation. By actively involving students and the wider school community, the project will empower younger generations to contribute to sustainable urban transformation and encourage other cities to adopt similar approaches.
Building on the experience of Elliniko–Argyroupoli and the project’s other Urban Living Labs, UrbanSWARM will connect local interventions with broader spatial and landscape analyses. The aim is to identify strategic “nucleation points” where locally adapted solutions can be introduced, replicated and interconnected.
Through coordinated “swarms” of small-scale interventions, the project will explore how local actions can collectively strengthen climate resilience across schools, neighbourhoods, cities and wider territories.
UrbanSWARM is led by the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences and is implemented within the framework of the Driving Urban Transitions Partnership.
