SEL-NTUA participates in the SEACURE General Assembly and strengthens collaboration with TASC-RestoreMed

The Sanitary Engineering Laboratory of the National Technical University of Athens (SEL-NTUA) participated in the 4th General Assembly of the European project SEACURE – Innovative solutions to prevent, reduce and remediate nutrient pollution along the land-river-sea system in the Mediterranean basin, held in Ferrara, Italy, on 22–23 September 2026.
Hosted by the University of Ferrara, the meeting brought together SEACURE partners to review progress across the project’s work packages, exchange experiences from the different demonstration sites and coordinate the next steps toward implementation and replication. SEL-NTUA was represented by Dr Theocharis Nazos, who presented the latest developments from DEMO 4 in the Thessaly Plain.

On the first day, project partners joined a technical visit to the Po River Delta demonstration site and National Park, gaining first-hand insight into local challenges, restoration approaches and the practical implementation of SEACURE solutions.
The visit was followed by a training session and round-table discussion on SEACURE solutions, lessons learned and transferability, with the participation of project partners and local stakeholders. During this session, SEL-NTUA helped initiate closer links between SEACURE and TASC-RestoreMed, opening a first channel for knowledge exchange and future collaboration between the two Mission Ocean projects. Discussions focused on how experiences from SEACURE demonstration activities could support wider transferability, replication and capacity-building efforts, while creating opportunities for synergies in areas such as Nature-Based Solutions, nutrient pollution prevention and remediation, technical assistance, stakeholder engagement and the uptake of innovative solutions across Mediterranean regions.

The second day focused on work package presentations, project coordination and key technical developments. SEL-NTUA presented the latest progress from DEMO 4 in Thessaly, which is currently in the construction phase. The demonstration combines Nature-Based Solutions and complementary treatment processes with the aim of improving water quality, reducing nutrient pollution and supporting water reuse in a region facing significant agricultural and climate pressures.
The General Assembly provided an important opportunity to align upcoming activities, share implementation experience and strengthen cooperation among SEACURE partners. It also marked a first step toward closer interaction between SEACURE and TASC-RestoreMed, two projects contributing to the objectives of the EU Mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters”. By connecting demonstration, knowledge transfer and technical support activities, such synergies can help accelerate the replication and uptake of effective solutions for reducing pollution and improving the resilience of Mediterranean water systems.
