SEL-NTUA presenting CARDIMED research and demonstration activities during EGU General Assembly 2026 in Vienna

From 3 to 8 May 2026, members of the Sanitary Engineering Laboratory of
the National Technical University of Athens (SEL-NTUA) — Prof. Simos
Malamis, Dr Theocharis Nazos and Dr Taxiarchis Seintos — participated
in the European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly 2026, held
in Vienna, Austria.

The EGU General Assembly is one of Europe’s largest scientific gatherings in
the Earth, environmental and climate sciences, bringing together researchers
from around the world to present new findings, exchange knowledge and
foster interdisciplinary collaboration.
SEL-NTUA contributed to EGU 2026 with two scientific presentations
developed within the CARDIMED project, showcasing research and
demonstration activities on Nature-Based Solutions, sustainable water
management and climate adaptation across Mediterranean regions.
The first contribution was delivered as an oral presentation entitled
“Microalgae as a Nature-Based Solution for Nitrate-Impacted Hard
Groundwater Reuse in Cyprus: Performance, Constraints, and Scale-Up
Pathways”. The presentation focused on research linked to CARDIMED
DEMO 9 in Cyprus, examining the potential of microalgae-based systems to
support the treatment and reuse of nitrate-impacted groundwater. Particular
attention was given to system performance, operational constraints and
pathways towards larger-scale implementation, demonstrating how innovative
Nature-Based Solutions can contribute to water resilience in water-scarce
urban environments.

The second contribution was presented as an on-site poster entitled
“Promoting sustainable domestic wastewater management through
Nature-based Solutions in a water-scarce Greek island”. The work
highlighted activities associated with CARDIMED sub-DEMO 1.1 on the
island of Lesvos, building on long-term research into domestic wastewater
treatment and the safe reuse of treated water for agricultural irrigation. The
study demonstrated the potential of Nature-Based Solutions to support
circular water management and reduce pressure on freshwater resources in
water-scarce Mediterranean islands.
In addition to the scientific presentations, SEL-NTUA participated in an
NBS4EU cluster splinter session, bringing together representatives from
related European projects to exchange experiences and lessons learned from
the implementation of Nature-Based Solutions. Discussions addressed
progress achieved across the projects, emerging scientific findings, and
common technical, institutional and implementation challenges encountered
when deploying Nature-Based Solutions in different climatic and territorial
contexts.

Participation in EGU 2026 provided an important opportunity to disseminate
CARDIMED’s scientific results to the international research community,
exchange knowledge with experts working on climate adaptation and
sustainable water management, and strengthen collaboration and synergies
within the NBS4EU cluster. Through these activities, SEL-NTUA continues to
contribute to the development and demonstration of innovative solutions for a
more climate-resilient and water-secure Mediterranean.
