CARDIMED in a nutshel
The vision of CARDIMED is to instigate systemic transformations to climate resilience in the Mediterranean region, by unifying and mainstreaming initiatives addressing climate adaptation and mitigation through NBS and other engineered infrastructure. To realise this vision, the project implements both the underlying framework and the network of 9 clusters of Demonstrators that form a critical mass for NBS replication, transferability, and upscaling.
CARDIMED is projected to connect over 28 Mediterranean regions and over 70 communities by 2030. Through demonstration and replication strategies, NBS will be effectively mainstreamed in order to build systemic resilience to climate change. To realise this vision, CARDIMED integrates innovation across multiple disciplines, being structured across four pillars that holistically connect the demonstrated solutions at a systems level: (1) Digital technologies for climate adaptation, (2) Socio-economic resilience, (3) WEFE Nexus, and (4) Nature-based Solutions.

Our expertise in action
SEL NTUA coordinates the administrative, financial and technical activities of CARDIMED, which consists of more than 50 partners. We ensure the quality and timely completion of all deliverables and milestones, as well as the early identification and resolution of any project implementation issues. Moreover, we lead WP6 which focuses on the coordination and monitoring of implementation of the 9 DEMOs, working with detailed DEMO Action Plans and progress reports.
Transforming concepts into impact
CARDIMED is implemented in 9 DEMOs, which include more than 17 demonstration sites:
DEMO 1 Valorization of non-conventional water loops in Lesvos, Mykonos, Sifnos, Greece
DEMO 2 Industrial symbiosis through smart water management in Central Greece
DEMO 3 Decarbonization of agricultural practices in Sardinia, Italy
DEMO 4 Upgrading grey infrastructure with NBS in Sicily, Italy
DEMO 5 Micro-forests and unsealed soils in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region, France
DEMO 6 Forest management and heatwave urban resilience in Aragón, Spain
DEMO 7 Cultural landscape restoration in Alentejo, Portugal
DEMO 8 Indigenous production landscapes in Izmir, Turkey
DEMO 9 Gardens of the future in the heart of Nicosia City, Cyprus
