Innovation Pillar IV
Nature-Based
Solutions

SEL NTUA, we pioneer research on place-based Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) that respond to locally identified vulnerabilities and adaptation needs. Our approach integrates social, ecological, and cultural dimensions to deliver impactful, scalable solutions across diverse landscapes, from urban to rural settings.

We work closely with cities, local authorities, industries, and communities to embed NbS into urban planning and industrial practices, promoting water resilience, flood mitigation, and climate adaptation. Our efforts enhance industrial symbiosis and human wellbeing, while fostering inclusive, co-created pathways to sustainability.

Our expertise lies in combining NbS with digital tools and advanced technologies to support evidence-based decision-making and strengthen digital literacy. We also explore systemic innovations through the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems (WEFE) Nexus, circular bioeconomy, algae-based solutions, and sustainable materials.

To date, SEL NTUA has contributed to the implementation of over 50 NbS sites including constructed wetlands, bioswales, green walls, and algae systems for groundwater regeneration. We’ve developed and led numerous Living Labs across Greece (for example on the islands Lesvos, Mykonos, Tinos, Sifnos, Skiathos) and across Europe, promoting co-design with local stakeholders and guiding policies for effective water management, wetland restoration, and sustainable development.

While rooted in the Mediterranean, our work has global reach and has been replicated and scaled up in Asia, Latin America, and Australia, contributing to socio-ecological transformation and advancing circular economy solutions worldwide.
