Innovation Pillar II
Water and biomass management and valorisation
Asset 2.png

SEL NTUA is at the forefront of research in water resources and biomass management and valorization, aiming to ensure the sustainable use of resources and the conservation of water environments, addressing critical priorities such as environmental sustainability, resource
efficiency, and the principles of a circular economy.

Our efforts focus on developing innovative strategies, technologies, and tools for integrated water resource management, water quality and pollution control, urban water systems, and biomass utilization. We emphasize holistic approaches incorporating social, environmental, and economic dimensions, including smart water systems, advanced urban water management technologies, and sustainable agricultural practices. These practices encompass water reuse, rainwater harvesting, smart irrigation, water-saving techniques, and biomass utilization to enhance soil fertility. Additionally, we design novel decision support systems for water management at multiple scales.

Our team has developed and tested technologies to convert biomass and waste into valuable products such as biofuels (biogas, methane, bioethanol, biodiesel), compost, bioplastics, and biochar. These products are further assessed for applications in soil enhancement, carbon sequestration, and water purification. Our overarching goal is to create efficient, sustainable, and economically viable solutions that advance environmental protection, mitigate climate change, and drive the transition toward a circular economy.
