Innovation Pillar VI
Environmental & Risk Assessment

At SEL NTUA, we advance environmental impact studies with a strong focus on risk assessment, aligning our research with key EU directives on water and wastewater management. Our work is grounded in the principles of urban wastewater treatment, drinking water quality, and water reuse standards, incorporating directives such as DIRECTIVE 2024/3019 on urban wastewater treatment, DIRECTIVE 2020/2184 on the quality of water intended for human consumption, and the Regulation (EU) 2020/741 on minimum requirements for water reuse.

Our research integrates cutting-edge methodologies with real-world applications, ensuring water and wastewater treatment systems are evaluated through a robust risk-based approach. We specialize in developing standardized risk assessment methods to identify micropollutant-related risks affecting ecosystems, human health, and animal welfare through wastewater disposal and reclamation, and assess water consumption risks across the entire supply chain—from source to distribution, ensuring safe drinking water management.

Additionally, our research places a strong emphasis on contaminants of emerging concern, including their transformation products and metabolites. Through threshold of toxicological concern and hazard quotient approaches, we conduct comprehensive risk assessments to determine their ecological and health hazards, safeguarding the environment, human populations, and wildlife.
